Our approach to training

We want you to have fun training with your dog. If you both like learning new skills and ways to make your life together the best it can be, we know you will enjoy our classes.

We are positive, reward based, force free trainers. When you join the Scallywags family we take the time to get to know you and your dog because one size doesn’t fit all. Some dogs have their quirks, need more space so they feel secure, and others are much more confident. The same is true for handlers. Whether you have had lots of dogs previously, or you’re just starting on your dog training journey, our aim is to support and educate.

About us

  • I became a dog trainer in 1988 when my first border collie Emily came into my life. Since then another seven collies ( including a collie cross) have been my best teachers as I progressed from being an eager owner to becoming a professional dog trainer, accredited by the Kennel Club in 2017.

My background is in the theatre industry and much of my career has been in teaching technical theatre skills in various drama schools both in the UK and in South Africa.

In 2014 Alison and I set up Scallywags Dog Services - offering dog daycare and training .

Over the last year we have decided to focus our energies on delivering training classes in which we can work with dogs and their people.

I’m currently working through a Tellington Ttouch Practitioner certification .

I am also qualified as a Kennel Club Good Citizens Scheme Bronze Level examiner.

I really love being a dog trainer. Being able to help owners understand their dogs better will improve the bond between them and enrich the dog’s life.

Dogs give us so much, we owe it to them to give them fulfillment through learning and training.

  • My name is Alison, and I am currently owned by my 8 year old German Shepherd Lacey and Hudson my 3 year old Hovawart.

I have owned my own dogs for 30 years, of various working breeds, a couple of cross breeds and a failed foster that stayed. Over the years I have competed in Competitive Obedience, Rally Obedience and more recently Breed showing with Hudson, who has qualified for Crufts with him 3 times. I also do man trailing and have done UK Sniffer Dog, Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

I qualified as a Companion Dog Trainer with The Royal Kennel Club in 2016, becoming a KCAI instructor and have been on the following courses:

    • Odin Canine Services - Instructors Workshop.

    • Animal care college -Level 2 Intermediate Canine Psychology -Credit.

    • Think Dog – 12 Credits at Level 2.

    • British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers – Pass at the 2nd Grade.

    • British College of Canine Studies – Holistic Health for Dogs Certificate – Merit

    • Dog Training College – Scentwork Specialist.

    • The School of Canine Science – Puppy Lab.

I am also updating my own training and education all the time.

Every day is a school day with dogs.

Don’t just take our word for it
